Is Neurofeedback effective to treat Vertigo?
In 2002 was published a study which demonstrated that Neurofeedback can successfully treat vertigo. The research, conducted by E. W. Weiler, analyses brain waves before and after treatment finding changes in brain areas associated with vertigo after application of the therapy.
These changes persisted 12 months after initiation of Neurofeedback treatment.
What is Vertigo?
Vertigo is a type of dizziness combined with perception of movement (rotation). In other words, the person feels its world is spinning or moving. Sometimes this feeling lasts a few seconds, and other times, this sensation can be very strong and unpleasant, experiencing loss balance. In case of severe vertigo, symptoms may manifests constantly during several days, having a very negative impact on day to day.
Vertigo is typically associated with a dysfunction of the vestibular system; this sensory system is located inside the ear and it influences the movement and sense of balance.However, vertigo is also linked to determined brain areas.
The main symptoms associated with vertigo are nausea, dizziness, vomiting and loss of balance. These symptoms origin loss of motion control, nuisances to be upright and/or work and depending on the dysfunction and brain area, we can also find additional symptoms such as:
– Burred Vision
– Hearing Loss
– Slurred speech
– Reduction of awareness level
Traditional treatments with Vertigo
Treatment options for severe vertigo depends on the cause. There are two options: the called “Epley maneuver” and a specific rehabilitation training usually carried out by a physician, chiropractor or therapist. Another alternative is medication, as antihistamines or prochlorperazine. However, these drugs are mainly useful in the early stages and their long-term usage is discouraged.

Neurofeedback training is an effective option when vertigo is caused by a brain injury, but also when there is no a structural cause which explains the symptoms. With Neurofeedback you can improve you auditory processing besides training other brain areas which stabilize dizziness and headaches.
